Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens Review

The Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS telephoto zoom lens is an improvement over one of Canon’s most popular lenses, the 70-200 without IS. Essentially, Canon took the old 70-200, added an amazing image stabilizer. The image stabilization system works to correct camera shaking due to hand holding in low light situations and allows photographers to shoot up to four stops lower without suffering the damaging effects of camera shake at low shutter speeds.

This four stop image stabilization feature is a first for Canon lenses. Canon also improved the optics of the lens, adding 2 elements and 4 groups over previous non-IS models. Additionally, the lens smaller profile and lighter weight of the 70-200 IS “L series” lens allows for more versatility and less arm fatigue over a wide range of applications.

The Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS telephoto will make an excellent addition to any photographer’s collection of lenses. For those who do not require the extra aperture range of a maximum f/2.8 that the top model Canon 70-200mm offers, the 70-200 f/4L IS makes an excellent compromise.

What Users Like About This Lens
The fast auto focusing ability of the Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS is praised by many professional and amateur photographers. Additionally, photographers tout the ability of this lens to produce consistent sharpness, excellent contrast and perfect color from corner to corner of every image. Previous 70-200mm non-IS models produced sharp images, but failed to carry the sharpness to the absolute outside edges of every image.

The addition of a four stop image stabilizer also gains praise. The ability to shoot in very low light conditions without the added weight, size and price of a f/2.8 maximum aperture make the 70-200mm f/4L IS a very versatile lens choice in the telephoto zoom range. Combine these features with exceptional build quality and the Canon 70-200mm f/4 L IS lens becomes a reliable performer that is admired by photographers who work in a variety of shooting situations.

What Users Don’t Like About This Lens
The largest complaint that photographers have regarding the Canon 70-200mm F/4L IS telephoto lens is its price. Unfortunately, the image stabilizing system adds a sizable price premium over older non-IS model Canon telephoto lenses. Many photographers, however, feel that the 70-200mm IS version lenses are worth every penny of the purchase price.
